Polystyrene recycling, picked up from your door
Polystyrene doesn’t go in your recycling bin, and it takes up a lot of room in the general one. ReSmart collects clean polystyrene packaging from doorsteps in more than 110 councils across Australia, together with the rest of the tricky stuff.
We collect everything, as long as it’s not wet, organic or dangerous.
What we take
We take
Clean and dry.
- Polystyrene packaging blocks
- Packaging from TVs, appliances and computers
- Polystyrene boxes
For businesses
- Polystyrene in the Commercial Pack packaging stream, no matter the size
That’s the whole rule, and it’s the same everywhere we pick up and in the Ship-to-Us satchels.
How it works
Book
Pick a date in the ReSmart app or on the web. Pay per pickup, or use your council's subsidised pickups where they apply.
Bag it
Polystyrene packaging, like the blocks that protect a new TV or appliance, goes in your pickup with your other items. Make sure it’s clean and dry.
Leave it out
Put your items at your door on pickup day. Our driver collects them with anything else you’re recycling, and you can see where it all ends up.
What happens to your polystyrene
We work alongside our approved recycling partners to find the best solution for every item: reusing first, then recycling, rather than landfill.
Where we pick up polystyrene
Doorstep pickups run in more than 110 councils across Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Hobart, Canberra and regional areas. Check your address on where we collect.
Outside our pickup area? Our Ship-to-Us satchels take the same items from anywhere in Australia. See how Ship-to-Us works.
Polystyrene recycling: FAQs
Is polystyrene recyclable?
Yes. It doesn’t go in your kerbside recycling bin, but we pick it up from your doorstep and send it to our approved recycling partners. Like everything we collect, it needs to be clean and dry.
What bin does polystyrene go in?
Not your recycling bin. Instead of filling up your general waste bin, book a ReSmart pickup and leave the polystyrene out with your other items. Check your address on where we collect.
Does polystyrene need to be clean?
Yes. We collect everything, as long as it’s not wet, organic or dangerous, so polystyrene needs to be clean and dry.
Can businesses recycle polystyrene?
Yes. The Commercial Pack has a packaging stream for soft plastics, cardboard and polystyrene, no matter the size. See the Commercial Pack.
