How it works

  1. Book

Pick a date in the ReSmart app or on the web. Pay per pickup, or use your council's subsidised pickups where they apply.

  2. Bag it

Anything you can scrunch in your hand goes in: bread bags, frozen food bags, bubble wrap, chip bags, wrappers, pouches. Clean and dry, so it doesn't mould.

  3. Leave it out

Put your items at your door on pickup day. Our driver collects them with anything else you’re recycling, and you can see where it all ends up.

What happens to your soft plastics

We work with multiple soft plastics recyclers to offer the best solution available in your area. Your soft plastics are transformed into feedstock oil, which can become soft plastics again, rather than ending up in landfill.

Soft plastic recycling in Melbourne: FAQs

Where can I recycle soft plastics in Melbourne?

From your own doorstep. ReSmart picks up soft plastics across 18 Melbourne councils, listed above, together with your e-waste and textiles and other hard-to-recycle items. There is no drop-off point to drive to: book a pickup and leave your soft plastics out. Check your address on where we collect.

How much does a ReSmart pickup cost?

ReSmart pickups start from $19. If your council subsidises ReSmart, pickups can be free or discounted. You see your exact price when you book.

What soft plastics do you take?

Anything you can scrunch in your hand: bread bags, bubble wrap, frozen food bags, chip bags, squeeze pouches, zip lock bags and ‘return to store’ labelled packaging. Hard plastics and foil packaging aren’t soft plastics, but they go in the same pickup. See the full list.

Do I need to be home for the pickup?

No. Leave your bags outside your front door on pickup day. If you would rather use a more accessible spot, add a pickup note when you book, and you can add a photo of where the items are on the summary page.

What else can go in the same pickup in Melbourne?

We collect everything, as long as it’s not wet, organic or dangerous. Soft plastics, textiles, e-waste, cardboard, polystyrene, batteries, light bulbs and the other misfit items all go in one booking, from one doorstep, wherever we pick up in Australia. See the full list of what we pick up.

What happens to soft plastics in Melbourne after pickup?

They go to our soft plastics recycling partners, where they are transformed into feedstock oil that can become soft plastics again. Read about the recycling process.

Can businesses in Melbourne get soft plastics picked up?

Yes. Offices and cafes use the Office Pack, and businesses with larger volumes use a Commercial Pack with a packaging stream for soft plastics, cardboard and polystyrene, with a dashboard that reports what was collected.
